ST. GEORGE - The growing popularity of online networking sites across the globe has yielded a number of unexpected results, and the St. George area is no different.

Young people, it seems, are following the news in growing numbers - 140 characters at a time.
"I get most of my news on the move," 23-year-old Jessica Van said Wednesday. With two jobs and classes to juggle, Van said Twitter, the online micro-blogging utility that can send messages via text message, is the way to go.
"Pretty much everyone is on it now, even politicians," she said.
Van follows Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, and a number of Utah state agencies, as elected officials, municipalities and other official entities have increasingly jumped onboard the "Twitterverse."
The city of St. George has created 12 different Twitter accounts, which offer everything from public works updates to personal messages from Mayor Daniel McArthur.
Marc Mortensen, assistant to the city manager, said the city is starting to see an increased interest - they had 159 followers as of Sunday - and the service could be used for additional purposes in the future.
"They aren't as big into it as some places, but they're kind of just getting started," 20-year-old Kevin Lankis said. Lankis, from Las Vegas, said his city uses Twitter to warn drivers about bad traffic spots, recruit new employees and advertise its newest services.
"St. George is a little smaller place, obviously, but they could use (Twitter) to do a lot of the same things," he said.
A number of state representatives and other officials have also started using the site, as a way to communicate directly with the public.
